Women’s cricket has now become recognised as a sport in which England excels, as do the Lionesses in football, and is attracting serious support, a large following and substantial crowds. Marlborough Cricket Club (MCC) is helping this cause, doing their bit and encouraging girls to try cricket. And then if they enjoy it, take up cricket as a real sport.
It was only 5 years ago, in the summer of 2019 that the England and Australian Women’s teams played in Marlborough, hosted by Marlborough College. Marlborough’s current youth coach Hugh Norris was there watching that day and in his words – “I was there that day and what an occasion it was!”
He adds: “Not only was the cricket great, but it was fantastic to see so many girls from the town and surrounding areas attend, and how much time both teams gave them during and after the match.”

Only five years on from that day in Marlborough those same teams now fill large international stadiums. It shows how much the girls and women’s game has grown in that time, and Marlborough Cricket Club want to encourage girls from the area to be part of it.
They are offering free membership for the rest of the 2024 season as they seek to establish the first Marlborough Cricket Club girl’s team. This will offer softball and hardball cricket options, in friendly fixtures with other clubs in the county. Over time MCC hope to have multiple teams and establish first women’s team too.
In a message to potential players, Hugh said: “You’ll be part of something special, as we seek to build our team together. A new team, a new kit – made specifically for girls and which we want your help to design – new friends and new sporting memories await – you’ll have a blast!”
No experience is required and all equipment is provided. MCC will have dedicated girls training sessions and all coaches are ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) qualified, DBS and first aid trained.
Hugh is quite clear about the future: “We have the vision and the ambition. We just need you to help us make it happen! “
He adds: “Be part of, and play your part in, one of the biggest growth areas of the game. We’re looking forward to welcoming you to the club, as we embark on our new cricketing adventure together!”
