Last weekend the Textiles and Stitch Around Marlborough group marked their 50th Anniversary with a Golden Exhibition in Kennet Valley Hall. The exhibition attracted 200 visitors who viewed the 68 exhibits which ranged from hand and machine embroidery, patchwork, quilting and felting, to mixed media and printing. Central to the exhibition was a group project of golden hoops created by members of the group and demonstrating different skills. Some of the exhibits were available for sale as well as handcrafted cards and tote bags. There were also demonstrations from members on weaving, box-making, abstract stitching and other skills.

Chairperson, Ann Louise Smith, told Marlborough.news, “It was a wonderful weekend of celebration. After all our hard work it was fantastic to see so many people there. We all enjoyed talking about our work and sharing expertise, knowledge and love of textiles and stitch with our visitors and with each other. Everyone also appreciated the huge range of cakes, made by members, and served with tea or coffee throughout the day.”

From small beginnings in Marlborough Library in February 1976, the group moved as numbers grew, first to the Scout Hall, then to the Bowls Club and finally to Kennet Valley Hall. Today there are 58 members who meet once month. The group has just completed its second year as an independent group and was formerly a branch of The Embroiderers Guild. Guest speakers and textile artists are booked to visit each month to give talks and lead workshops. Additionally, there are ‘in house’ workshops and demonstrations and members’ stitch days.
