Year 6 St Katharine’s Primary School pupil, Finlay, has won a competition run by Colas Rail to design a wrap for one of their new lorries. The theme of the competition was ocean sustainability and the lorry, with Finlay’s eye-catching design, went to the school today together with members of Colas Rail. Paul Taylor, Sustainability Director of Colas Rail, presented Finlay with his prize (an ipad) in front of the whole school.

Paul said, “Finlay’s poster is great for reminding all of us that we need to look after our planet. All the entries we received were fantastic. Colas Rail, who is the company behind all the rail repairs in recent months to the Newbury, Savernake, Bedwyn lines, is committed to sustainability and engagement with the community.”

Colas Rail have also donated the framework of four bug hotels to the school’s woodland and members of the company were helping the children build the bug hotels today.
Niki Jones, Principal of St Katherines, said, “We were delighted that Finlay won the competition. Sustainability is one of our big curriculum drivers. As a forest school we want to make sure that the children are connected to the local countryside and to help them to realise that small acts, such as creating bug hotels, make a big difference.”

Finlay was very excited to climb into the driving seat of his lorry although it was not the first time he had seen the lorry. He and members of the school’s Lego robotics team had spotted it on the M4 on their trip to Bristol earlier in the year.
