It was a great privilege for me to be invited by Danny Kruger MP to share my reflections on General Practice as I experienced it in the 25 years that I was a family doctor in Marlborough at the end of the last century. It says much for Danny that he is clearly very concerned about the appalling state of the NHS today, in contrast to what it has been in the past.
As we read daily in the press, waiting times 1) to see a GP or 2) to have a telephone conversation with same 3) to see a consultant/specialist or 4) to receive an ambulance in an emergency and 5) while seated in a casualty department, have soared.
And in addition, the situation is clearly so dire that doctors and nurses are now striking with inevitably a serious negative impact on patients who need to be seen and treated by these professional people.
As I state in my interview with Danny Kruger, it seems that medical care has been “dehumanised” meaning that we are all so dependent on, if not addicted to modern technology and in particular the way that it is used for communication, with everyone glued to their mobile phones rather than meeting “face to face”. And my belief is that this is having a devastating impact on relationships, attitudes and indeed as far as the NHS is concerned the proper care that the sick, and indeed the dying require.
The only solution to the problems facing the NHS is for members of the medical profession to be allowed to properly meet face to face with members of the Government’s Health Department perhaps including Danny Kruger and share the problems they face and the solutions to those problems in order to provide the quality of care that so many GPs and Consultants have given in the past.
It is a step in the right direction that Danny is so clearly concerned that he kindly interviewed me.
