Chilton Foliat Primary School has been awarded a £1,000 grant by the James Ballantyne Memorial Fund to help support the school’s Year 5 and 6 water sports trip.
The trip, which takes place in July, features STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) activities, including raft building, and is in line with the fund’s ethos of supporting and encouraging young engineers.
James Ballantyne was a past pupil at Chilton Foliat Primary School who was tragically killed in a road traffic accident on Friday 3 July 2015. His parents, Warren Ballantyne and Catherine Hill, set up the fund to provide information and advice on engineering and to instil a love of STEM subjects among young people.
Catherine Hill, comments: “James was an engineering and rafting enthusiast, who participated for many years in the Crafty Craft Race on the Kennet and Avon Canal. We are therefore delighted to award his primary school with a grant that combines his two passions, and we are hopeful that our support will encourage Chilton Foliat Primary School pupils to consider engineering as a future career.”
Headteacher, Katie Turner, commented: “We are very grateful to the James Ballantyne Memorial Fund for supporting our water sports trip and to our year 5 and 6 parents for their enthusiasm and tenacity in raising funds for the day. It will be the first time many of our pupils will have experienced some of the water sports and we are hopeful that the trip will increase their confidence and self-esteem while developing communication and problem-solving skills.”
