Two sets of paintings of Aldbourne – owned by Brown Family and Evans Family
But we now understand that Maton was not solely a Marlborough painter. There are four works of Aldbourne, all attributed to Maton. Smaller in size than any of the other works, all four depict central Aldbourne, mainly different views and perspectives of the Green and pond. Recognisable now? Just.
The scenes for both of the ‘pond’ pictures for both families’ works (below) are of a similar position. Across the Green, the pond, looking towards St Michaels. It was thought that possibly one was a copy of the other, but unlikely. As with Maton’s Marlborough paintings, particularly of The Green there, he painted similar scenes but always from slightly different positions and perspective.
Brown Family Matons:
For the above pair not much is known about the early stage of their journey. Originally owned by William and Kitty Brown, great-grandparents of current owner, Henry they were passed down to their grandson Richard in 1980, who then gave them as wedding gifts to the current owners Henry and Lucie.
Evans Family Matons:
The provenance of these two Aldbourne Matons isn’t clear. Owned by Anthony and Jocelyn Evans they were purchased only in 2006 (see image of the note on the rear of one of the Evans Matons), purchased from the estate of Anthony Marreco. When (and from whom / where) he acquired them – unknown.
