George Maton was an artist during a period of the Victorian era, who was from Marlborough. Born and raised here, active as a sign writer but for us now his works throw open a window to see how life in Marlborough was then. We have compiled a new section about Maton, covering all his works (that we know about), who he was and his life, which is quite a story in itself.
Yes, an ‘interesting’ life. This new section shows images of all of his works that we are aware os. Probably any more as well, likely many that haven’t yet been recognised as being by Maton as he never signed his work. But all we’ve found so far are oil paint on wood board.
The section can be accessed either by clicking here, or by clicking on the ‘Maton’ button above the headline.
Maton – as the introduction explains – was never a ‘great’ artist, but for Marlborough he was important. His works show the town, and life in the town as it was in the mid-nineteenth century, Nowadays iPhones and cameras take pics, and these will remind us of what today is like, generations into the future.. But when Maton was painting photography was barely invented and his works, his style, is ‘representative’, in so far that it is almost photographic. He drew what he saw, probably in the way that he saw it.
