Pewsey Vale Support Group for Hope and Homes for Children held their annual walk for the charity in perfect weather on the evening of July 5. A total of £440 was raised from donations and the group look forward to their major fundraising event – the Carol Concert in Marlborough College – which this year will be held on December 16.
The summer sponsored walk proved to be a very sociable occasion with 45 walkers plus a number of well-behaved dogs. Participants set off at 6.00pm from Marlborough Football Club car park on a route devised by committee members Sally and Trevor Brown. The walk followed the River Kennet to Axford where there was a welcome break at the weir before continuing up and onto the downs for spectacular views.
After 2 hours the group arrived back at the Marlborough Town Football Club where they enjoyed a welcome drink at the bar and some stayed on for a pre-ordered delicious home cooked supper.
Alison Netherclift, from the Pewsey Vale Support Group Committee, said, “Many thanks to the Catering Staff at the Club and for their kind donation to the charity. A big thank you to all who came and helped to raise funds.”
The charity Hope and Homes for Children finds alternative, high quality family based care for vulnerable children, who otherwise would be in orphanages. Their work is now recognized as best practice by UNICEF and the World Health Organisation.
The charity develops family support services and establishes robust fostering and adoption networks. And it has a local connection.
Colonel Mark and Caroline Cook, who lived in West Stowell, near Marlborough founded the charity after their experience of Bjelave orphanage, in Bosnia. The charity now works with children in Ukraine, other parts of Eastern Europe and Africa.
