Year 6 leavers at Preshute Primary School entertained the whole school, parents, grandparents and friends with a rousing production of ‘Shakespeare Rocks’ – a musical, funny but factually correct take on the life and times of William Shakespeare.
Year 6 pupil, Jessica, played the role of Burbage, who is a dance teacher responsible for teaching the men to act like girls – no women acted in Shakespeare plays when they were first performed. Jessica, together with Anais, led the dance moves in the show stopping number ‘No girls allowed!’
Caspar, another Year 6 pupil played the part of a sorcerer who had to prevent ‘Macbeth’ being spoken which would lead to bad luck for members of the cast. Caspar also played the role of an apple seller and his favourite lines, spoken while eating a maggot infested apple were, “Full of nutritious meaty maggots, crunchy on the outside and chewy in the middle!”
A highlight for cast and audience was the ‘Show it in The Globe’ number which resounded around the hall and possibly the village. ‘Shakespeare Rocks’ was a major summer term project with children making all the props and scenery for the play as well as making model stages in shoeboxes in their Design Technology lessons. They also read ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘A Midsummer’s Night Dream’.
Headteacher, Claire Hann-Perkins, said, “The children worked very very hard and gave fantastic performances. The singing was also fabulous.”
