‘Marlborough Difference’ is the title given to the campaign launched by Marlborough College to fund 100 free places to The College which would represent 10% of the total student community. This will be one of the largest bursary fundraising campaigns ever run in this country with a target to be raised of £75m.
This is an area that has been actively developed, particularly so in recent years. At present some 150 students – 15% of all students – receive some degree of financial support. Regarding bursaries, in 2018 The college had 12 free places, now that number has grown to 39, but by raising £75m over the next ten years there will 100 free places in The College at any one time.
The College firmly believes that the Campaign will not only make a difference to the bursary recipients
but also to the School and wider society. Increasing the number of pupils on free places is expected to
have a transformative impact on the College by creating a more diverse pupil community.
The Master, Louise-Moelwyn Hughes, commented: “I know from personal experience how transformative a free education at a school like Marlborough College can be so I am thrilled to be launching the Marlborough Difference Campaign. Funding more free places will give children with potential the opportunity to make a difference. I am really excited about the impact we can have and the positive influence they will bring to the College.”
Louie Wilkins, a pupil from nearby Swindon who currently has a free place at the College, said:
“Marlborough has given me the chance to fulfil my dream of becoming a neuro-surgeon. Both my
parents work in the NHS and I want to go on to help people and make a difference. Thanks to
Marlborough I feel confident that I can make this happen”.
Marlborough College was founded in 1843 with the purpose of providing reduced fees for a proportion of pupils and this continues to the current day. Originally the school was created to provide education for the sons of clergy but has developed to become internationally renown, the UK’s largest co-educational full boarding school, where students with potential are given the opportunity to make a difference.
