On Friday 10th of November, Kennet Valley School hosted its first Communi-tea Cafe. The idea of running an after school café open to members of the local community came from Year 6 pupil, Jess, who is also School Council Chair. Jess wanted to provide a space where people could come to chat, have a cup of tea and maybe play a board game. In particular, she wanted to create somewhere that people who might not have someone to talk to could come to help them to combat loneliness.
Getting the cafe off to a good start was a whole school effort with children in all year groups decorating invitations and two members of Harriers Class going out to deliver them by horse!
Katie Mallinson, Headteacher, said, “After Collective Worship on Friday, a group of parents remained at school and made use of the space in the hall to meet and chat. At 3.30 they were joined by members of the wider community and by 4.00 the hall was buzzing with people chatting and enjoying a cup of tea and a biscuit.
Many of those who came said how welcome Jess and her friend, Poppy, had made them feel and how much they were looking forward to the next Communi-tea Cafe in two weeks’ time. Jess and Poppy have already talked about what they will do to ensure the cafe continues to be successful, including setting up a cake rota!”
The next Communi-tea Café will take place on November 24 at 3.15 pm in Kennet Valley School hall – all members of the local community are welcome.
