Robert Hiscox, without whom The Parade Cinema would likely be a fantasy dream in the eyes of many, or the White Horse Bookshop be no more than a fond and distant memory to those who had grown up with trips into the wonderful world of hardbacks, paperbacks and imagination via No 136 High St. Or others of us in the town who have just been able to enjoy many of the events in and around Marlborough, enabled or supported by Robert over recent decades, last night received just a bit of recognition and thanks from us, the town.
Mayor Nick Fogg, with many of the Councillors attended the ceremony held in the Council Chamber of the Town Hall last night, all (unusually) robed out of respect for the occasion were there to present Robert with this award of thanks from Marlborough.
Former City Grandee – Chair for more than forty yers of Hiscox Insurance, and one of those who ‘saved’ Lloyds of London – probably the most important Insurance market in the World when it fell in to disarray towards the end of the last Century – Robert has achieved much but also delivered back to the communities around him.
High Sheriff of Wiltshire between 2011-12, a Deputy Lieutenant of the County until 2018, chair of the Bobby Van Trust (a charity that in partnership with Wiltshire Police provides home security advice and solutions for elderly, vulnerable and disadvantaged people throughout Wiltshire), Robert’s presence and involvement has spanned much of what happens and has happened in Marlborough and Wiltshire over recent years.
“I am overwhelmed. Marlborough is a wonderful town with a great community spirit. I have definitely been rewarded enough as it has given me constant pleasure – but everybody loves a prize and I am no exception. I am deeply grateful to the Council and all who have helped me along the way.” Robert noted to Marlborough.news on receipt of his award.
Many of the former mayors of recent years also were present – see five below. What is the collective noun for a group of Mayors / former Mayors? No prizes for suggestions…..
