Nomads 85 – 5 Corsham 2nd XV
The Nomads – Marlborough 2nds – assembled a large squad on a perfect day for playing rugby for the first home league fixture on the Common and delivered a result against Corsham 2nd XV with a score that wouldn’t have been out of place in a T20 cricket match.
The Nomad’s growing band of supporters were not to be disappointed, they delivered a score within the first two minutes when Neil (3) scored and Nathan Morgen (10) added the conversion. 7-0 to the Nomads.
From the re-start Marlborough made good gains with territory, with strong running and support. Unfortunately, this effort came to nothing as a penalty in midfield was conceded which led to some aggressive defence by the home team as Corsham enjoyed some attacking ball. A Corsham knock on resulted in a scrum. Serupepeu Niubasaga (8) picked up and carried, he then passed to Viliame Waqanidrola (12). The backs then finished a three pass move to see Callum Hunt (15) go over for the Nomads, second try in seven minutes, Morgan then added the extras, 14-0 to the Nomads.
With a try fest on the cards, the supporters were in for a treat and they didn’t have to wait long. There was a great run from Pita Robanakadavu (14), deep into Corsham’s 22 and an offload saw great footballing skills from Morgan who scored in the top right corner. The conversion was missed, so the Nomads moved on to 19-0 with twenty minutes gone.
A resulting lineout led to the next Marlborough try, Rhodri Campbell (6) took it off the top, running strongly deep into Corsham’s 22. The forwards retained possession in the resulting ruck. Louis Haiseman (9) passed to Callum Hunt who added another try to his tally. Morgan kicked the conversion making it 26-0 to the Nomads with only 24 minutes played.
Corsham got their only break through on the 26thminute, a high tackle penalty gave them a good field position in Marlborough’s 22. Good forwards play saw another penalty advantage gained. After a couple of further phases, Corsham crashed over the bottom left to open their account, missing the conversion, the score was now 26-5 to the Nomads.
Marlborough added a further four tries and two conversions before half time. On the 31stminute, Viliame Waqanidrola ran a great line to send Joe Pittams over and Morgan converted. Five minutes later saw Neli (1) find Pita on the halfway line, he used great feet and elusive running to score in the far-right corner. The conversion was missed, but then Neil made another strong run, linking with Viliame Waqanidrola who again sent Joe Pittams over for his second try. Joe added his third and final try of the first half, Morgan converted. The score stood at 52-5 in the Nomads favour at halftime.
It wasn’t until the 60thminute that Marlborough was to score again, a break and a dummy pass from replacement Tomasi Rosoki took the score to 59-5 with Louis adding the conversion under the posts. Normal business resumed with a further four more tries and 3 conversions. Corsham sapped of energy and playing up hill, wanted the game tight. Marlborough had other ideas, they gave the ball air with strong running and passing.
Louis was passed the ball in the in-goal area from Pita Robanakadavu to touch down and convert the points. Eight minutes later Louis converted the next as the Marlborough score grew to 73-5.
Quila picked from the base of ruck and with quick feet caught Corsham guards asleep and finished under the posts. Morgan converted but was unlucky in missing the last conversion. Pita had scored to seal the 13 to 1 try victory. An excellent performance by all and a great home win which was well supported. This emphatic win sees Marlborough 2nds go joint top with Frome 2nds.
