A major boost to community sports services in Pewsey has been kicked off by Wiltshire Council.
One of the first stages of the new Pewsey campus project has started with work on a new sports and games area in partnership with Pewsey Vale School.
The Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) will provide a vital modern facility for children at the school to share with community groups using the Pewsey campus, which can also be used for wheelchair sports.
The all-weather tarmac surface chosen by Wiltshire Council, the Community Operations Board and the school is a cost-effect option ideal for tennis, netball and basketball and recommended by Sport England.
Work is progressing well and the games area will be open in the early weeks of the new school term starting in September.
Pewsey is one 18 community campuses being developed by Wiltshire Council over the next few years. The campus programme will improve the delivery of local services in communities, while making maximum and efficient use of public sector buildings.
As well as the first phase of Springfield Community Campus opening on August 7, initial construction work has recently started on Salisbury Campus and plans for the campuses in Melksham and Tisbury have recently been granted planning approval.
Cllr Jonathon Seed, cabinet member for campuses, said: “We are delighted this sports and games area can not only be used by Pewsey Vale School but also shared with the wider community and disabled sportsmen and women.
“The sports area will give the community a taste of the modern facilities Wiltshire Council are committed to providing through its campus programme.”
Caroline Baynes, vice-chairman of the Community Operations Board, said: “I am happy to say how delighted the campus team are that working with partners Pewsey Vale School and the council, we have seen work on the MUGA begin.
“This is the first piece of work for the Pewsey campus and will be a great asset for the community and school once it opens in September.”
