Whilst the 1st XV are now becoming established in Level 5 of the National Rugby hierarchy in the Regional 1 South Central Division, the Marlborough Colts (U18s), the ‘next generation’ are in sight of becoming one of the top sixteen Under 18s teams in the UK. To achieve this level, they will need to beat the Reading ‘Rams’ on The Common, this coming Sunday afternoon.
They are going well in the National Cup. The ultimate aim is the final, at a larger neutral ground – possibly HQ Twickenham? – but no decision has been forthcoming from the RFU as yet. However, that would be the final so some way to go there but already, in the last 32 of the competition they are achieving, and not just on a local stage but nationally.
Overall, unbeaten in seven games so far this season. Apart from their Cup performances, after four league games they are sitting at the top of their division – the Premier of Dorset & Wilts U18s.
So this is where the 1st XV of tomorrow will come from, giving Marlborough Rugby strength in depth.
Kick off on The Common is 2pm on Sunday and there will be strong support from the rest of the club but this is a chance for Marlborough to glimpse the future of their rugby club and help the Colts push forward to a national level that not long ago was probably not much more than an optimistic dream.
