Last Saturday – 20 July – Marlborough Cricket Club hosted their ‘Big Cricket Picnic’ which, as well as the 1st team playing a league match against Marshfield created a big family day out in the beautiful setting of the club’s Savernake ground. And beyond watching the cricket those who came were able to enjoy a great family atmosphere with a host of activities and food, entertainment all there to make a special day out.

The day started with a juniors training session, ages 5 and up. The youngsters had great fun and showed their cricketing ability, as well as their teamwork. And then they joined Marlborough’s 1sts, in their warm-up and had a joint team photo. Seniors and juniors together, Today’s generation and tomorrow’s – with the latter quite rightly being treated as the VIP’s!
Following the morning training session, it was clear Marlborough’s youngsters still had plenty of energy, as they enjoyed the additional activities on offer, such as the bouncy castle, table tennis, football, giant Jenga, face painting, hook-a-duck and everyone enjoying winning their prizes in the tombola.
There was a real family atmosphere, with the Big Cricket Picnic in full swing! As the match ticked along, more people from the town and surrounding areas arrived to enjoy the day and it was wonderful meeting and chatting to them throughout.
During the tea interval, the club ran an additional afternoon junior session, as well as some 1:1 sessions in the cricket nets for those who wanted some extra coaching.
Marlborough Cricket Club want to thank everyone for attending and for their support. It was a day for the Marlborough community to be welcomed to cricket and what the town’s club offers. A great family atmosphere all day, young and old enjoying cricket, great food and great company. The same next year? Already in the club calendar.
Marlborough Cricket club are keen to encourage more youngsters to join and learn the game. Free membership for the rest of the year to all juniors, no experience necessary, the club will provide plenty of that….. Interested?
