Pewsey now has its very own climbing wall. Situated at St Francis School, Pewsey, the wall is available for use by local schools and community groups as well as St Francis School Pupils.
The wall, costing £20,000 has been funded mainly by Charlie’s Charity, the charity set up in memory of Charlie Lamb who tragically died in a car accident, aged just 18 in 2009.
Charlie was a pupil at St Francis and a very keen sportsman. Charlie’s Charity was set up by his family to raise funds for young people in sporting clubs and organisations in Wiltshire. It is hoped they will benefit from support to help them make the most of their sporting abilities and opportunities.
The new climbing wall is installed in the St Francis’s Hemery Hall, the sports hall named after former Olympic gold medalist and former parent and Chair of Governors at St Francis, David Hemery.
Kevan Brown, Director of Sport at St Francis School said: “We are very grateful to Charlie’s Charity and delighted that they wanted to work with us and provide a new sporting facility that will benefit pupils as well as the wider local community. Both the charity trustees and I felt that the wall was an appropriate choice as climbing is an activity that can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of their age or sporting ability. Our new climbing club is proving extremely popular amongst St Francis pupils!”
Representatives from Pewsey Primary School, Woodborough School and the local Girl Guide and Cubs groups, have already received training to enable their pupils or members to make full use of the climbing wall.
