The Marlborough Playhouse, a café and play space for 0-6 year olds and their parents and carers, is opening next door to The Parade Cinema on Friday September 11th. The Playhouse is situated in what was D & R Furnishings’ warehouse and is in the process of being transformed into a family friendly environment. As well as a café there will be a sensory den, a mini café and shop, soft play and climbing and exploring facilities. There will be a dedicated bay space penned off for babies. The Playhouse will be open from 9 am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday and on Sundays it will be closed for private hire such as birthday parties and other events.

Sophie Mair, who has lived in the area all her life and is an ex-St John’s student, has been working hard to bring the project to fruition. She told Marlborough.news, “There’s really nothing for young families in Marlborough. I always felt there was something missing. When the Leisure Centre closed for refurbishment the soft play area there was lost and there was uproar on social media from those who had been using it. I decided I would try to replace it with something better. Other local towns such as Devizes, Newbury and Swindon have play cafés so why not Marlborough?”
Sophie hopes The Playhouse will provide a good network of support for young families. She has arranged for an independent midwife, Becky from Birthworks, to come in to offer specialist advice for any baby worries as well as baby weighing. Sophie also intends to run brunches for mums and dads to socialise with each other. Faux Arts in The Parade, is also much missed and Sophie hopes to fill the gap it left by offering ceramic painting of cups and seasonal decorations which will be fired. She has already made all the mugs that will be used in the café.

Sophie is grateful for the sponsorship she has received to help make The Playhouse a reality but is actively looking for more sponsors.
“Local people and local businesses have been so welcoming,” commented Sophie.
