A nurse who works in the Eating Disorders Unit at Savernake Hospital in Marlborough, has been nominated for a 2014 Health Hero Award for always going above and beyond for her patients.
The Health Hero Awards, run by Boots, The Daily Mail, and ITV’s This Morning, celebrate the heroes of healthcare – the thousands of people who make a difference to our lives every day.
Carol’s nominator was admitted to the Eating Disorders Unit – which is run by Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust – more than three years ago, when she met Carol. The first time she was discharged, Carol drove her all the way back to her home in Wales – just one example of how Carol continually goes above and beyond for her patients to help them on their road to recovery.
Whether coming in early before her shift starts to give a patient a beauty treatment to boost their self-esteem, or finishing a night shift and going straight out to support another patient in their home; Carol always goes that extra mile for her patients.
On being nominated, Carol said: “I believe that being a nurse means that it is my job to really care and give patients the very best support I can. It is important to me to make sure that my patients are well looked after and this care does not stop when they leave the hospital.
“I became a nurse because of the compassion a student nurse once showed me, so it feels wonderful to know that I have now been nominated for a Health Hero Award because of the difference I’ve made to my patient’s lives.”
With nominations having taken place over the last few months, Carol was one of five nominees invited to attend a star-studded Health Hero Awards gala dinner, held at the Marriott Hotel, London, where the overall winner was announced.
TV’s Dr Ranj Singh presented Carol with her award and paid tribute to the amazing care Carol showed her patients and the difference that she was making to their lives.
Simon Roberts of Alliance Boots commented: “It has been an honour to be able to acknowledge and celebrate so many brilliant examples of people doing life changing work.
“Boots UK is part of the Daily Mail Health Hero Awards because we understand the vital role played by all who provide healthcare in the UK. Carol Bennet is an amazing example of someone who is at the heart of her local community in Wiltshire and is having a positive impact on people’s lives every single day.”
