It was late last night when Caroline Sadler, representing the Liberal Democrats was confirmed as the newly-elected Marlborough Town Councillor for the ‘Marlborough West’ Ward.
Democracy returned to Marlborough and the electorate of the town grabbed the chance to let their voices be heard and their crosses on ballot papers count. The turnout was almost exactly 30%, significantly more than for the previous election, in 2011 when Noel Barrett-Morton won his seat on a turnout of just under 25%.
Caroline Sadler was elected by a majority of 217, attracting 541 votes against Caroline Wrench’s 323. Caroline Sadler’s share of votes cast was 62.6%.
A delighted Caroline Sadler paid tribute to the Conservative Candidate, Caroline Wrench and thanked all of the Election staff before committing herself to work hard for all the people of Marlborough. David Kinnaird, the Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate who lives in Marlborough was at the count and after the declaration commented: “Huge congratulations to Caroline Sadler. We have to see this result is a stunning win for Liberal values. It is a rejection of the Conservatives dominance here and marks the beginning of a political sea change in East Wiltshire”.
Marlborough.news congratulates Caroline Sadler on her excellent success and looks forward to her playing an important role in the future of Marlborough, as being the only member of the Town Council chosen by those whom she is to represent.
Many Westminster by-elections have recorded lower turnouts than here yesterday so this election was a resounding success, not just for the triumphant candidate, Caroline Sadler, but for Democracy in Marlborough and for those who went out to cast their vote. To coin a traditional cliche used (too often!) at times like this – ‘The People of Marlborough Have Spoken’……
