Ogbourne CofE Primary School is celebrating after achieving the Eco-Schools Award with distinction. The award recognises the outstanding commitment of its pupils, staff and wider school community to environmental sustainability.
Eco-Schools assessors were very impressed with the creation of the school’s Psalm 23 Reflection Garden. The wildflower meadow attracts a wide variety of insects and birds which significantly enhances biodiversity across the school grounds as well as providing a peaceful space for reflection and learning.
Water conservation at the school has been improved with new water butts installed around the school and collected rainwater now being used for water play. The school plans to expand these initiatives by creating rain gardens and collecting rainwater from the building’s flat roof.
Assessors also commended the school on the way sustainability has been embedded throughout the curriculum. Whole school initiatives such as ‘Carbon Free November’ explored practical ways to reduce waste. Simple but effective changes have been made such as introducing reusable tea towels in the Early Years Foundation Stage, and sponge and glue pots in the infant classes to reduce single-use materials.
Lucy Crump, Principal at Ogbourne CofE Primary School commented, “We’re delighted to receive this recognition, which reflects the superb efforts of our entire school community. As our climate continues to change, we remain dedicated to learning, adapting and taking positive action to protect our environment.
As part of the next stage of Ogbourne’s Eco journey, all pupils will take part in workshops to learn how to care for, and maintain the Reflection Garden. This will help keep caring for the environment at the heart of school life, both within and beyond the school gates.”
