Recent heavy rain has left the main street in Lockeridge with a strange legacy – piles of small pieces of chopped up rubber tyres and coloured plastic, mixed with sand and gravel.
The whole of the main street from beyond the Dene to the River Kennet bridge was affected with clumps of this mass strewn across the road and blocking drains. A large pile had to be dug away to clear one of the main drains at the end of Ivy Lane.
“Who will be responsible for getting rid of this mess? And what will be the longer term effect on the local drainage system – will this lead to houses getting flooded in the village as the drains will be blocked up?” questioned resident Bruce Thomas.
Concerns were also raised about the effect that this unnatural detritus may have on the River Kennet.
Where did it come from? One possible aswer was from a local stables, and that these chips, along will the sand and gravel were part of the all-weather training gallops.
‘At least it makes the traffic drive more slowly’ commented Lockeridge resident Adrian Ross-Magenty.
