Marlborough Golf Club’s Lewy Hayward has just achieved the ultimate in Europe for any junior golfer – winning the 2024 Junior European Open in Spain. An outstanding achievement, more than 1,000 aspiring juniors applied for the tournament, only 163 were accepted to start, and of them, only one came out on top – Marlborough’s Lewy Hayward.
A large, major and sought-after tournament held on two courses – Torrequebrada and La Canada GC – in Spain that were described as ‘tight from the tees, in great condition, with very slick greens’. Over five rounds it was Lewy’s final round of eight under that secured victory.
The field was cut to just forty two players after the fourth round and Lewy started that final round three shots behind the leader but that round, with seven birdies and one eagle was enough to promote him to first place, winning by three shots.
But Lewy won’t have the chance to defend next year as this was his last junior event, and in the words of Marlborough Golf Club’s ‘Thistle’ – ‘what a way to finish a outstanding year of golf’.
Talent on the course obviously runs in the family as dad Lee is a PGA Pro himself. Lewy and Lee both want to thank everyone at Marlborough Golf Club for the support.
Again, an outstanding achievement for any young golfer, but one for which all in Marlborough and the Golf Club should be rightly proud.
