Marlborough’s haul of awards in its first entry to the South West in Bloom competition were celebrated in style at the Town Hall on Thursday afternoon (16 October) with a ‘thank you’ to all those who made it possible.
Not only did Marlborough achieve ‘Best New Entry’, the town was awarded ‘Best in Category’ and a special award for ‘Best Community Initiative’ which went to Marlborough Community Orchard for the Diamond Jubilee Plantation.
Against the backdrop of silverware, trophies and awards, Alison Galvin Wright, Chair of Marlborough in Bloom committee, and Mayor Councillor Marian Hannaford-Dobson, invited those who worked hard to help the town do so well in South West in Bloom to an Afternoon Tea in the Town Hall.
Special mentions went to the Town Council’s Grounds Team headed up by Grounds and Estates Manager, Richard Beale as well as staff at Wiltshire Council and sponsors TH White and Waitrose.
Thanks also went to volunteers who turned out to do litter picking and weeding. Most thanks went to those in the community whose combined efforts helped to sweep up the prizes – Action for the River Kennet, Merchants House, Marlborough College, Marlborough Waterfront Association and schools as well as retailers, businesses and all those residents who all make terrific efforts to improve the town.
Alison read out a letter from Clare Perry, MP congratulating the Marlborough in Bloom committee for helping to orchestrate the town’s success in the competition. A first entry for Marlborough and it’s clear that this initial step into the Royal Horticultural Society’s competition will go from strength to strength.
Next year – the town aims to go higher, and anyone interested in joining the Marlborough in Bloom Committee, please contact Alison Gavin-Wright, c/o the Town Clerk, Shelley Parker at the Town Council Offices on 01672 512487
