London Welsh are Marlborough Rugby’s next opponents on The Common this coming Saturday at 2pm.
One of the ‘great’ clubs, London Welsh were last in the top tier of English Rugby in 2015, but then, after an unsuccessful season the professional club ‘imploded’ and were dissolved. But what was left was amalgamated in to their amateur set-up, which is the London Welsh that Marlborough entertain this coming Saturday. But the club and heritage live on, as does their traditional base of Old Deer Park in Richmond, where Marlborough are due to visit in March next year for the return fixture.
In the Seventies particularly London Welsh were the ‘supplier’ of players such as JPR Williams, Gerald Davies, Mervyn Davies, John Dawes and many others to the great Welsh national side.
And also to the British and Irish Lions, for the (successful) Lions tour to New Zealand in 1971 seven London Welsh players were selected, a record that still remains unbroken for any club.
The Club will also be screening this weekend’s Worlld Cup Quarter Final matches. All welcome, see below:
