Marlborough Town Council have, today April 21, announced that the town will hold a Festival of Flowers in July. The Festival will be seen as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations and everyone, residents, businesses, pubs, community groups and schools, are invited to get involved – Platinum Jubilee or royal theme optional. It is hoped that a festooned with flowers walking trail around the town can be created as well as an online photo gallery to celebrate the displays and creations.
In previous years Marlborough has been very successful in the South West in Bloom competition gaining Gold awards. Last year’s entry was led by the Town Council with gratefully received support from Val Compton (founder of the Waterfront Garden in Kennet Place) who worked with the Its Your Neighbourhood entrants. This year the Bloomers have decided to take a break from the competition and the Town Council express their thanks here to all those who have planted, weeded, painted, litter-picked and generally beautified our town over the years.
As there is no entry into the South West in Bloom competition this year, Val spoke to the Town Council earlier in the year and suggested building on the competition and encouraging people to make Marlborough ‘fit for a Queen’. “It’s not about committees,” she stated. “It’s about us keeping our gardens, frontages and neighbourhoods as we want them to be, and in a condition that makes us all proud.”
The Town Council commented, “After some very heavy hints from Val, as part of our Platinum Jubilee celebrations and to fill the gap, we have launched this Festival of Flowers for 2022 in its place. We’ve selected July because that is usually when the RHS judges have paid us a visit, and to keep the Jubilee celebrations going beyond the June bank holiday. We hope it will ensure that we can all continue to admire and be proud of Marlborough, in bloom.
Remember that simple things like litter picking your street or cleaning windows will add to the overall effect. We really hope you’ll join us to make Marlborough beautiful with flowers this year. Start planning and, more importantly, start planting!
Whether you do it for the Queen, yourself, your street or your community, we really hope you’ll join us.”
