On Bank Holiday Monday – 4 May – the Salisbury Rd Rec will be hosting this year’s Marlborough Sports and Activity Festival – where youngsters from the age of ten can come and try lots of different sports. To see if the enjoy them, or if they have a natural flair for one or more of the many sports there. It’s free, and even a packed lunch provided by Marlborough College’s catering team when taking a break between the football, rugby, climbing wall, cricket – or one of the numerous other sports going on.
It’s being organised by Marlborough Sports Forum and Wiltshire & Swindon Sport (WASP).
Simon Mills, chair of the Marlborough Sports Forum described to marlborough.news as the process being a bit like “sporting speed dating“. But above all he added that it is there to encourage and inspire young people in Marlborough to become regularly physically active. To find out what they enjoy, and what they want to be good at.
Marlborough is a ‘Sports Town’. There are lots of sports clubs and associations for all ages. But for the young, those for whom this Sports and Activity Festival is there for it’s to give them a taster of what’s available. Simon adds that it’s unique in so far that any youngsters can try what they want, at no cost, and enjoy a great day out with friends and family.
This year’s Festival follows the two previous (and very popular) events held in the past few years. Marlborough Sports Forum and Wiltshire & Swindon Sport have been helped by many local organisations to make the day possible, with particular thanks going to the Marlborough Area Youth Forum, Marlborough Area Board, the Town Council, Marlborough College, the Parade Cinema and many others as well, all playing their own key part in creating a successful ‘Sports Day’ for Marlborough’s youngsters.
All the organisers ask is that those coming to the Rec on 4 May register in advance, either by the QR Code below, or by sending an e-mail to Dominique Oughton of Wiltshire & Swindon Sport at Dominique@wiltssport.org.
