Marlborough & District LINK held its annual Tea Party at the Kennet Valley Village Hall in Lockeridge on Saturday 4 July to celebrate and commemorate the late Vicky Sullivan.
A delicious afternoon tea was prepared and served to invited clients and guests by Marlborough Catering. Marlborough Community Choir provided excellent entertainment with the audience singing along to a medley of well-known songs from musical shows.
LINK, and particularly Marlborough & District LINK plays a pivotal rle in enabling many in our community to make visits – to Doctors and for other important appointments – that would otherwise be impossible, or very expensive. To many the LINK service is a lifeline. LINK is here for the elderly, disabled, single parents or those in need because of illness or injury.
The Marlborough & District LINK is a charity, like all other LINK schemes across Wiltshire. It’s a volunteer service.
Vicky Sullivan could only be described as a force of nature. She made things happen and the success of the LINK system here is very much down to her and her dedicated efforts in it’s early days. Hugh de Saram described her in an apt and very appropriate way – ‘she believes in people and is totally committed to encouraging them to fly when most are pretty contented just to walk’. So the annual Tea Party in her memory brings everything that Vicky held dear back to the Marlborough & District group.
Louise Campion, LINK’s newly appointed Chair, spoke at the event: “I am delighted to welcome you all to our annual Tea Party. Due to its popularity, this is the fifth year such an event has been held. My sincere thanks go to all the volunteers who so willingly give of their time to be part of Marlborough LINK”.
She applauded the fine performance given by the Choir and recognised the importance of enjoying each other’s company over afternoon tea. The event also provided a good opportunity to highlight the valued service provided by LINK’s drivers and co-ordinators, as well as LINK’s Good Neighbour Scheme in which adult volunteers as well as students from St John’s and Marlborough College visit LINK clients.
Marlborough & District LINK provide a transport service (and more) for those who really need it. Manned by a team of volunteers, they assist residents in Marlborough and the surrounding villages who have trouble getting out and about or need a little conversation at home. They drive people to medical appointments, day centres, opticians, dentists and the shops. Volunteers also offer neighbourhood support by picking up prescriptions, shopping and home visits to provide companionship.
Marlborough & District LINK always need more volunteers – drivers and co-ordinators as well as people to provide neighbourhood support.
