The Crown Estate expects to submit a planning application for the site they own west of the Salisbury Road – opposite the Tesco roundabout and the business park.
This announcement comes as the results of the Crown Estate’s consultation on options for this housing development are published. These show that the majority of respondents supported the housing development, with most people backing the optimum plan to build 220 new homes and a hotel.
The consultation was on proposals: (A) a 180 home scheme, including affordable housing, and (B) a 220 home scheme with a hotel and a larger amount of affordable housing.
Of those who indicated a preference for either Option A or Option B, 66 per cent preferred Option B, while 20 per cent stated a preference for Option A. The remaining 14 per cent said their preference was that no development of any form should take place on the fields.
The feedback also revealed that ‘Providing affordable homes for local people’ was selected as one of the three most important benefits of the proposals by 71 per cent of people. ‘Providing investment in local transport and community infrastructure’ was the second most important benefit (59 per cent), while ‘Improved connections to the town centre’ was third (30 per cent).
The consultation included a two-day exhibition at Marlborough Town Hall which was attended by almost 300 people. The proposals were also available to view at a dedicated consultation website. This was visited by 550 unique users and can still be viewed here.
Over 277 residents responded to the consultation either by submitting feedback at the exhibition, on-line or via freepost.
The indicative plans below show how much more land will be needed for Option B – taking the development further south and further up the hill.
