Earlier today the twenty pupils from Marlborough College completed their ultra-marathon in aid of nine charities. See pic:
Original story: The route will take them from the College, at the end of the High Street, up towards Barbury Castle and past the Hackpen White Horse, before looping back to the College. Those completing the ultra-marathon will complete this route twice.
Pupils have undertaken considerable research into the charities, including calls in advance with representatives and visits to their headquarters in London. One student, Arthur, said this made the process more ‘purposeful’. Adding: “Often, charity fundraising feels removed from the cause itself, with little understanding of what the charity actually stands for. Involvement at this level has felt far more impactful and purposeful”.
The pupils, all from Year 12, are fundraising for charities that are linked to topics being discussed at their inaugural Model United Nations (MUN) conference on 20 June. MUN is a debating activity where pupils take on the representation of a nation for a simulated version of the United Nations, and seek to cooperate on a range of issues, from modern-slavery to the Russia-Ukraine war. The conference has attracted over three hundred pupils from twenty six different local schools.
Alongside this ultra-marathon, pupils have undertaken sponsored swims and bike rides, sweet selling and mufti days. Another pupil, Cosima, led a trio up Yr Wyddfa (still known to many as ‘Snowdon’) during half-term, in particularly harsh weather conditions. So fa the group’s efforts have raised nearly £4,500.
