On Friday (18 November) at almost exactly 6:30 pm the large crowd enjoying the festivities and Christmas Market stalls in the High Street watched as Mayor Lisa Farrell pushed down on the plunger up on the Town Hall balcony and suddenly, the Christmas Lights up and down the centre of Marlborough burst into light. Click on any pics to enlarge.
Santa was around as well. Downstairs in the Town Hall Court Room a long queue waited in great humour for their turn to give their Christmas wish to Santa. A very busy court Room with Santa’s presence there organised by the Marlborough and District Rotary. Then, in the Lions’ sleigh, there he was doing a circuit of the High Street.

Plenty of entertainment. On the steps of the Town Hall, Renee, Matilda & Rosie, followed by Daisy Miles and then Sammy Till-Vattier (all from St John’s warmed the crowd up before the big switch-on. Phoenix Brass set up outside Lloyds Bank playing Christmas favourites and the musical line-up was competed by Amanda and Phil just after the lights went on.

Beyond music, crowds were wowed by a pair of angels swooping around the High Street – and even a couple ducks….

Retail was ready for the lights switch-on. Below, pics of Mayor Lisa Farrell at The Merchant’s House with Councillors Mervyn Hall (also Vice Chair of Merchant’s House Trust) and Nick Fogg, and also of the display at the iconic White Horse Bookshop.

A couple of pics below of the preparation, and before the crowds arrived. The clock on the St Mary’s Tower shows 5:44 so nearly two hours before switch-on. The light toy seller there early, ready to tempt anyone wanting a multi-colour umbrella, light sabre or choice of many other illuminating devices…..
