The busy A346 through the Savernake Forest is to be closed overnight for a week while the pothole-ridden road is resurfaced.
The weight of 1,000 lorry movements a day has caused considerable damage to the road, which passes Marlborough business park and cuts through the hamlet of Cadley before turning into the Burbage bypass.
Parts of the road surface have been stripped away. The damage is particularly noticeable at Cadley, and at Leigh Hill, a steep hill that leads traffic to the narrow Burbage Wharf canal and railway bridge.
The road will be closed from its junction with George Lane at Marlborough to the roundabout south of Burbage between 7pm and 6am starting on Monday, April 3. Work – which includes resurfacing, repainting road markings, and ironworks is expected to take five nights.
It looks like lorry drivers heading to the M4 from the south coast ports will be taken on a long detour – along the A342 through Everleigh and Upavon to Devizes, then along the A361 to Beckhampton, and along the A4 to Marlborough before rejoining the A346.
