David Bruce, founder with his wife Louise, of The Bruce Charitable Trust (www.brucetrust.org.uk), was presented with his OBE at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday of this week (7 June), by Prince William, Duke of Cambridge.
This followed the announcement of the award in last June’s (2021) Queen’s Birthday Honours list.
David’s award was for services to charity. The Bruce Charitable Trust was formed in 1988 following the sale of Bruce’s Brewery and the Firkin Pubs. In 2016, The Trust gifted its four boats to The Kennet & Avon Canal Trust and they are now operated by its Bruce Branch volunteers at Great Bedwyn.
Since then, over 25,000 disabled, disadvantaged or elderly people have enjoyed holidays on the Kennet & Avon Canal on four specially-designed, purpose-built, wide-beam boats.
The other charity for which David was recognised is The Kennet & Avon Canal Trust, of which he was President from 2011 to 2019, during which its volunteers were awarded in 2014 The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service by the Princess Royal.
