I refer to recent comments about the proposals to make part of the Parade one way.
I refer in particular to the comments by Mr Peter Morgan.
Firstly I agree that traffic and associated pollution is a problem in Marlborough. A traffic study has bed carried out but few conclusions made.
Pedestrian Safety
However none of this has anything to do with the proposal to make part of the Parade one way.
As someone who uses the town centre every day it is obvious that two way traffic along the narrowest part of the road is impossible.
If a car is going down the parade and another going up neither can move.
This means one must reverse . I have seen cars reversing back into the A4 at the Parade junction into the traffic on the A4.
I have also seen cars reversing onto footpaths on the Parade endangering pedestrians.
Exiting the Parade onto the A4 and turning g left into the High St is always hazardous because visibility is very limited to the right and cars travel in front of Pinos at least 30mph.Also drivers will be looking to the right and not at the Zebra crossing which is well used.
Exiting from the Parade onto the A4 and turning right towards London Rd/ Herd St is even more hazardous due to poor visibility and crossing the flow of traffic.
Turning right into the Parade from the High St direction also means crossing g the flow of traffic coming from London Road into the narrow Parade where they may meet a vehicle coming up the Parade.
The idea of making the narrowest part of the Parsde one way is simple common sense .
The objective is to improve pedestrian safety , not solve all the towns traffic problems.
I also understand that Atkins who carried out the traffic study support this idea from a safety perspective.
Wiltshire Council Highway Authority are also responsible for Highway safety/ pedestrian safety and indeed have a duty to ensure safety on the roads and footpaths.
This hazardous situation is easily rectified.

Ian Mellor
