Marlborough History Society are pleased to announce that their 2018 War Memorials project – to gather all local research available on WW1 village war memorials and publish on our website – is now complete. Please go to www.marlboroughhistorysociety.co.uk and follow the link to ‘histories’. All eighteen villages in our area plus Marlborough College have replied, and current photos of all war memorials in the area are included.
Some villages went to a lot of trouble to find and send detailed research on the names on their memorials, and even contributed a few fascinating contemporary photographs of the scenes at the dedication services. We have located memorial halls, church plaques, stone crosses, two lychgates and a clock!
The project can now provide a wonderful opportunity for WW1 research and analysis in the future, both genealogical and straight historical, of the whole of our area. Further relevant data can always be incorporated.
It has given us great pleasure to make contact with other keen local historians, representing the local villages surrounding Marlborough, to enable this to happen. We should be very happy for our website to be used to publish other village history projects in the future.
