Mayor Mark Cooper officially opened Marlborough Community Fridge today, Saturday June 5. After cutting the ribbon and donating a dozen eggs to the Community Fridge he said, “Marlborough Town Council is delighted to be working with Transition Marlborough on such a fantastic community project. I’d like to encourage everyone to come to use the fridge and to bring and take food. I’m sure it’s going to be a great success. I’d like to thank the wonderful volunteers who are helping to get this project off the ground.”
Milly Carmichael, from Transition Marlborough, explained that the fridge is “not a foodbank but about finding a creative use for surplus food. The food is free for all, anyone can use the fridge when it is open.”
The Community fridge is situated in the Community Room at Cooper’s Corner in the George Lane carpark. It is open on Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 am-2 pm. The garden area outside Community Room is being developed into a herb and veg garden and there is a green Johanna compost bin to take any compostable food waste. The fridge is currently being stocked from donations from Waitrose. For details of what can be donated please see photo above.
Milly commented,“We are keen to hear from other retailers in the town who might want to be involved. We would also like to hear from anyone who would like to volunteer to help the fridge stay open for longer. Please email Clare Harris, Assistant Town Clerk on charris@marlborough-tc.gov.uk. It would be good to have it open at school closing time so pupils could call in for some fruit on their way home.”
