Marlborough U12s 40 – 10 Minety U12s
Marlborough started their 18/19 season with an emphatic win in their Dorset & Wilts Cup match against Minety at home. The U12s put on a fine display of attacking rugby and have adapted well to the new laws introduced this year.
A tense opening 15 minutes had Marlborough trailing the visitors who started well, bullying the home team at the break down and dominating territory. Marlborough kept their cool and absorbed this early pressure to find a break for Harry, who levelled the score. Minety broke through, once again to nudge into the lead but Marlborough were soon able to contain their opponents with a sound defensive line and turnover ball thanks to Jakey’s tenacity in the ruck and maul. This gave the home team clean ball and time to construct some good passages of play with ball in hand, the first of which resulted in a fine try by Ben into the corner, off the wing.
From this point, Marlborough found a new gear. JJ, Jack, Freddie and Tom each started to break through the opponents defense with powerful driving runs. Max, Archie T, and Charlie tackled well and didn’t allow Minety any room. Whilst Jacob J didn’t find the space to unleash his speed today, he put himself in the thick of action midfield.
James L and Matthew made some crucial tackles, that clearly frustrated the visitors. Archie B, scooped up any clearance attempts from deep and was able to launch some great counter attacks. But it was Harry who stole the day with a five rampaging minutes, scoring superb solo efforts (seven tries in total) and in turn putting the score out of reach for the visitors.
James F, put his name on the scoring sheet with a lovely try out wide. Freddie, touched down with a textbook crash ball, but perhaps my pick of the day was a brilliant run by Matthew who, in the tackle, released a pop pass into Charlie’s arms who went on to touch down, sealing a well earned victory for Marlborough.
