Yes, the (old) Police Station in George Lane has been attacked by thieves who stripped lead from the roof. Scaffolding now surrounds the front entrance area where workmen are making good the roof, putting felt up there to stop any leaks now that the lead has gone.
The Police Station is still in the process of being sold. About three years ago an application for development was submitted but didn’t proceed for reasons we understand of safeguarding (overlooking the school behind) and of course, Covid, although the proposed residential development had been approved (with conditions) by the Town Council’s Planning Committee. It was approved by Wiltshire Council in April of last year (2022) but with conditions.
One major concern when the application for development came up for consideration related to the frontage of the wall (see pic) with the old stone logo and inscription, which many felt should remain as a feature within any new development.
The site is now under the responsibility of the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) and, in response to questions, they confirmed that plans ‘are still progressing’. Proceeds from the sale will go back into policing within the County..
So… Lead nicked, replaced with felt – which is less likely to be targeted by thieves (again). And development? Likely, at some point before too long.
