‘Grimsby’ and ‘sea’ are two words that are inevitably bound together. Even the town’s football club, Grimsby Town are universally known as ‘The Mariners’, and as from tomorrow, Wednesday 17 March, Marlborough will also have a bit of Grimsby, the sea and what it produces when ‘The Grimsby Fish Guy’ appears with his van at the market in the High Street.

Grimsby’s Guy Burnett is one of the town’s very active and far-reaching mobile fishmongers. Already turning up at many markets across the South already, Marlborough on a Wednesday has now been added to the list.
“I will be bringing all types of fish and seafood and also take special requests for things that I do not have on the van. The fish I normally stock on the van is cod, haddock, smoked fish, kippers, monkfish, halibut swordfish, plaice, crevettes, dressed crab, cooked and peeled prawns, salmon fillet, hot smoked salmon the list goes on. ” stated Guy when asked what he would be bringing, adding “If there is anything I do not have on the van I can always source and bring especially for customers the following week”.
Guy was born and raised in Grimsby and he’s only ever worked with fish. He’s one of about 200 mobile fishmongers supplying markets, shops, restaurants and homes all across the Country.
For the mobile fishmonger such as Guy the pandemic has actually helped. He explains: “Because of covid outdoor markets and home delivery became a much more safe way to shop and the demand has risen greatly. People feel safer shopping outside and the home delivery service is a great help for any one shielding or that doesn’t feel comfortable going into large supermarkets. On top of that there is not a great deal of traditional fishmongers anymore and many of the fish counters in supermarkets are also closing. Fish is a great healthy meal especially now when health is at the forefront of everyone’s minds during this global pandemic. Luckily I have not felt the effects of Brexit too much other then a slight rise in the cost of fish but the cost does vary throughout the year anyway”.
