Marlborough’s Mayor, Cllr Mark Cooper, accompanied by the Town Crier, Mike Tupman, officially opened The Enablement Hub at Marlborough Town Football Club today, October 28. Previously called The New Road Day Centre, The Enablement Hub, which is a registered charity, offers social facilities for vulnerable adults aged 16+ three days a week. Members and staff celebrated the move from New Road to the Football Club with a Halloween party.
Debbie Bond, Chair of The Enablement Hub, explained that the move to the Football Club will mean that they are able to offer many more activities to their members. Debbie told Marlborough.news, “We have had a wonderful welcome from Marlborough Town Football Club and the Committee. We are keen to get those who attend mentally and physically fit. The Football Club offers more space and outdoor space which will mean we are able to expand the activities on offer. The mental health of our members deteriorated over the last eighteen months while the centre was closed despite our efforts to keep in touch through Zoom, quizzes and meeting when possible in the park.
We’re all about making our members realise what they can do so they are ‘enabled’ not ‘disabled’. We want them to strive to do more to be the best they can be. “
Introducing the Mayor who gave officially opened The Hub, Town Crier, Mike Tupman, said, “It will be a brilliant day for you all – Halloween costumes and creepy crawlies – you’ll have a ball. Put on your dancing shoes and take to the floor. But first let me introduce you to the most important man in the town.”
Following a loud cheer from all those present, Mayor Mark said, “That’s the nicest welcome I’ve had since I’ve been mayor. You look amazing in your Halloween costumes. This is a fantastic facility and you’re going to love it here. I’d like to thank all the staff and volunteers for all they do. You’re the backbone of Marlborough.”
Members attending The Enablement Hub are offered a daily hot meal – a professional chef is starting next Monday. They enjoy arts and crafts activities as well as games to help with social interaction and daily life skills. Members enjoy three day trips a year as well as Halloween and Christmas parties.
