Main Duties and Volunteer Driver Guidelines

Main Duties
To carry out tasks which could be expected of a good neighbour, at the request of the Link Co-ordinator.
These requests will take into account your availability and the services you are prepared to offer according to your application form.
You will be expected to:

• Understand and operate according to the Link Mission Statement
• Maintain client confidentiality at all times
• Wear your Link identity badge
• Display the Hospital Parking Card
• Hand donation envelopes to clients
• Return donation envelopes as agreed
• Submit expense claims regularly
• Advise the Co-ordinator of dates when you are not available
• Refer clients needing further help back to the Co-ordinator
• Report any concerns about the client to the Co-ordinator
• Protect your own privacy by not disclosing your telephone number to clients unless previously agreed with the Co-ordinator
• Be aware of health and safety in respect of both yourself and the client
• Be familiar with Link Scheme policies issued to you
• Undertake an Disclosure and Barring Service check
• Undertake training if appropriate.

The Link Scheme is grateful for the time Volunteers give as drivers and hope that it is an enjoyable experience for them. The following guidelines are intended to promote the safety of the Link Volunteer Driver and Link Clients:

• Volunteers, driving and their vehicles.
• The Link Management Committee has a legal responsibility to ensure that vehicles used on Link journeys are safe and legal. Vehicles must have a MOT, Tax, insurance and the Link Driver must have a current, valid driver’s licence. Link Volunteer Drivers should be contacted by a Committee Member on an annual basis to confirm these details.
• If a Link Volunteer Driver incurs any motoring convictions they must inform the Link Scheme Volunteer Recruitment Officer. Any convictions acquired will be considered by the Link Management Committee and the suitability of the Link Volunteer Driver to continue will be assessed.
• Link Volunteer Drivers are responsible for their own fitness to drive including their eyesight and awareness of the effects of any medication they are taking, including the effects of alcohol and tiredness.
• Should a Link Volunteer Driver wish to continue after their 80th birthday, they may be asked to have a SAGE driving assessment and may continue to drive if this is satisfactory.
• Although private cars are not subject to No Smoking Legislation the Link Management Committee should request that clients’ views are respected if the Link Volunteer Driver smokes. Clients wishing to smoke in a Link Volunteer Driver’s vehicle should ask the permission of the Link Volunteer Driver.
• All passengers should wear appropriate seat belts at all times.
• Link Volunteer Drivers must comply with all driving legislation and the Highway Code.
