Having achieved Gold in the 2017 Royal Horticultural Society’s ‘South West in Bloom’ competition this year’s Marlborough in Bloom Committee are not going to rest on their laurels.
Steve Pascall, who has taken over from Anne Crawley as chair of the Marlborough in Bloom Committee, told marlborough.news: “This year it’s all about getting the community really involved, this is what the judges will be looking for. We want to tidy up Marlborough, it’s terrible the amount of litter that is being dropped around the town.
“We need to get Marlborough looking tidier and that will encourage more people into the town.”
Marlborough in Bloom is joining forces with the Town Council to participate in the Great British Spring Clean which will take place on Friday, March 2, Saturday, March 3 and Sunday, March 4. Volunteers are needed and Steve hopes that schools and local organisations will be involved.
In addition to tidying up the town Marlborough in Bloom will also be sprucing up the plant troughs. The troughs are handcrafted from recycled timber and are strategically placed around the town.
They will be given a fresh coat of paint and replanted. It is hoped that some of the floral displays can also highlight aspects of Marlborough’s history.
Marlborough in Bloom are grateful for the donations made by local businesses which fund the plants and the paint.
The theme for this year’s competition is ‘Birds’ and there will be art and craft competitions held in local schools to explore this theme. Landmark Trust in the High Street have already offered to display some of the entries and Steve hopes more shops will become involved.
As well as volunteers to keep on top of the litter, volunteers are needed to water plant troughs and dead head flowers. Steve Pascall and Councillor Andy Wilson are holding a recruitment coffee morning in the Town Hall on Sunday, March 25.
