A specific Minister for the West Country to “deliver jobs and growth” will be introduced by an incoming Labour government, the party announced today (Tuesday).
Shadow cabinet office minister Michael Dugher revealed the appointment of a minister for the West Country after Labour leader Ed Miliband outlined a pledge that he would devolve power to England’s “great towns and city regions.”
Such a minister, said Mr Dugher, would “facilitate relationships” between central government, the local authorities and enterprise partnerships, and act as a voice for the West Country.
“Our belief is that regional growth demands sub-regional initiatives, co-ordinated and driven forward at regional level,” he added. “Labour is pledging to introduce regional ministers to put the voice of the English regions at the heart of Labour decision-making.
“They will help to shape policy around local and regional interests with a view to correcting the regional inequalities that have arisen under the Tories.”
