Great Bedwyn station gets a taste of modern technology: it now has a touch screen, self-service ticket machine.
Just beside the ticket machine, there is a smart new passenger shelter on platform two – the east-bound side of the station. There are no plans to replace the wooden shelter on the other platform.
As part of this upgrade for the station there will soon be a new cycle shelter – also situated on the east-bound side of the station. It is outside the station and will take up two or three parking places.
On Thursday morning (April 3) the ticket machine was ‘Out of Service’ – only carrying the gloomy warning: “Due to weather conditions delays are possible. Please check your journey before purchase.”
But by the end of Thursday afternoon the machine was in full working order.
One advantage of the machine is that GWR will be able to tell us how many people use the station – beyond those with season tickets whose number they already know.
However, this upgrade for the station is so new it has not yet hit the relevant websites. The National Rail site says the station has no ticket machine. And the GWR site for Bedwyn station tells enquirers: “Ticket office opening – yes. Monday-Sunday closed. Self-service machines – no.”
