In her first column since the referendum result, Claire Perry MP has warned about what might follow the referendum result which “…was not the result I wanted, nor the outcome that I believe is best for our country.”
Her column in the local newspaper is headlined: “EU vote result will prompt an uncertain time for us all.”
“We have opened a Pandora’s box of economic uncertainty, campaigners have made promises to people that cannot and will not be kept (and are already scrambling to discount what was said and printed) and some, thankfully few, campaigners have whistled the devil’s tunes of intolerance and we should not be surprised that evil has started to dance.”
Mrs Perry repeats her belief that it was right to call the referendum and says the government will “…do what it said and start implementing the decision in the best possible way for the people we represent.” She confirms that the deal the Prime Minister negotiated in February ‘will not be triggered’.
On the economy, the Devizes MP says she is “…very sad to see us lose our prized triple A rating for our government debt”: “We may see a recession, as people stop spending during the uncertainty, but we have built a strong foundation for the British economy over the last few years, and we will hopefully weather any storms.”
“More concerning is whether companies wanting to invest here continue to do so.”
She ends: “My job over the next months is to do all I can to protect the hard-won jobs and investment we have seen locally over the last six years, as well as do my best to help you as your MP.”
Mrs Perry does not mention David Cameron or the race for the Tory leadership. However her remarks quoted above about the Leave campaign’s promises may be a pointer. And she does not either mention that Wiltshire voted ‘Leave’ or what that means for local Conservative parties.
