Wiltshire police told Marlborough News Online: “There was concern about a group of protestors outside the store, who were voicing their opposition to the Conservative Party while Devizes MP Claire Perry held her constituency surgery inside the store.”
“There was initially a report of an assault, however when an officer arrived and spoke to all the individuals involved it became clear that a crime had not been committed.”
It appears, Marlborough News Online understands, that one of the protestors tapped Mrs Perry on the shoulder to get her attention. The officer found the protestors to be calm and polite throughout and the matter was resolved peacefully.
The protest was organised by a member of the Swindon branch of The People’s Assembly ‘Against Austerity’ campaign. Mrs Perry’s surgery ended fifteen minutes sooner than advertised with at least one constituent still queuing to talk to her.
Earlier this year, during the election campaign, Mrs Perry called in the police when some Conservative Party posters featuring her portrait were defaced.
