Jonathan Leigh, at the end of his first year as Master of the College, declared: “Marlburians succeeding at the highest levels and securing vital university placements. Congratulations to all as another strong cohort of young men and women advance to their next stage in life”.
The College website reports: “The 2013 leavers have surpassed last year’s excellent cohort with 19% A* and 58% A*/A grades (or pre-university equivalent) in this summer’s examinations.
“Against a backdrop of on-going national efforts to combat grade inflation this is a great testament to pupil and staff endeavour. 68 of the 165 pupils sitting A levels and Pre-University secured at least 3 A grades or their equivalent.
“The International Baccalaureate cohort averaged 34 points, which carries an equivalent of more than 3 A* grades.
“Many individual performances were exceptional. Five pupils secured the highest grades available to them (A*/D1) in at least four subjects: Lexi Lazell gained five top grades (4 A*s and a D1) whilst Adam Miller, Cameron Oliver, Ione Wells and Henry Williams achieved four A*/D1s in different combinations, with Adam also securing an A* in his Extended Project Qualification and Cameron an A.
“More than a third of the candidates (56 pupils) gained straight A grades, many of them in four subjects.
“Outstanding results were achieved by the pupils sitting Pre-University with some 83% achieving the equivalent of A*/A grades at A2 in papers more akin to the old A level. Several more departments are switching to this qualification from September and we are constantly assessing the best and most rigorous curriculum choices for our pupils as uncertainty continues to surround changes to the national system.”
