Womens football has suddenly grabbed the attention thanks to the Lionesses in Switzerland when they retained the Eouropean Championship. Here we have Marlborough Town Ladies, undefeated last season winning their league and securing promotion. But on Sunday – 24 August at Elcot Lane they will be competing in the FA Cup for the very first time.
Marlborough Town Ladies (MTFC) will make club history when they make their entry into the FA Cup taking on Yateley United Ladies. Kick off at 2:00 PM on the main Elcot Lane pitch in what will be a very special day for the team and our town.
The Ladies’ side was reformed just last season after a year’s break, driven by a new wave of talented players stepping up from Marlborough Youth FC (MYFC). That strong local pathway has been pivotal in building a competitive squad, which went on to complete an undefeated season, winning the league and securing promotion.
The success continues, with the club also launching its first-ever Ladies Development Team this year — both a sign of the rise of women’s football and also the talent we have here at Marlborough’s grassroots level.
Both MTFC and MYFC are calling on the Marlborough community to come out in numbers and show their support.
Stuart Slater, MYFC Chair, explains, “This is a proud moment for Marlborough Town FC and also for the whole community. I am so proud that the association with MYFC has helped make this possible. It’s great to see so many of our young players grow into senior football – let’s make this a day to remember!”
Jamie Hughes, MTFC Chair, adds,”For the club to be making its FA Cup debut is a huge milestone and a testament to the hard work, passion, and commitment shown by everyone involved, from the players and coaches to the volunteers behind the scenes. Women’s football in Marlborough is thriving, and this match is another step forward in our journey. We’d love to see the community pack the sidelines and be part of this historic day.”
