Report of the October monthly meeting of Textiles & Stitch Around Marlborough
Sue Hobson – What is a quilt?
Sue Hobson was the speaker for our October meeting held at Kennet Valley Hall in Lockeridge and she introduced her talk by explaining that she came from a family of sewers but had followed a career in science. She went on to explain the different types of quilts, how they are constructed and their history with the oldest dating back to 1718 in the UK. The oldest ones in the US dated back to the 1740s and it was the Amish who bought materials from the UK and learnt the craft.
Sue then went on to show us a wonderful selection of quilts from the American Museum near Bath, the Festival of Quilts at the NEC, Birmingham and the Quilt Festival at Houston, Texas. The final images were of the 2021 Best of Show winners.
The next meeting of Textile & Stitch around Marlborough will be via Zoom on Monday 1 November at 14.00 when the well known textile artist, Bobby Britnell will be giving a talk entitled “My Creative Journey”. The following day Bobby will be leading a Zoom workshop entitled “Drawing the Line”.
