Agreement in principle for a two-day Marlborough Food and Drink Festival to be staged on the Common in May next year has been approved by the town council’s Amenities and Open Spaces Committee.
Garden Events Ltd, which has staged a similar festival in Cheltenham for the past six years, originally wanted to introduce one in July, but the dates clashed with other bookings for the Common.
The event now planned for next year will have about 180 exhibitors show-casing food, wine, beer, kitchens and cooking utensils and will also present a cooking demonstration theatre.
There will also be a music stage with blues and folk music being played to provide a picnic in the park atmosphere and food and drink will be sold on site, the event aimed at a family audience.
Town clerk Shelley Parker, who has talked to Cheltenham Borough Council officers, reports that they were “very positive” at the prospect for Marlborough and revealed that that no problems had occurred during the Cheltenham festivals.
And the event will not only attract visitors to Marlborough but also provide an income for the town council from the rent paid by stallholders.
